Tau Kappa Epsilon Fraternity

Collegiate President Welcome

Dear Friend:

Since our founding as the first national fraternity at Georgia Southern in 1967, Tau Kappa Epsilon has established a distinguished history of demonstrated leadership in the classroom, on campus, and in the community. As founding members of the GSU Interfraternity Council (IFC), we've continually demonstrated our leadership in the Greek Community. As North America's largest fraternity, Tau Kappa Epsilon has been a solid force in the Greek movement since our founding at Illinois Wesleyan University in 1899.

Our Fraternity Founders created TKE because they found the need for a new kind of Fraternity, a Fraternity that would select its membership on the basis of personal worth and character, rather than on the artificial basis of rank, position, or wealth. TKE has always avoided the rank, artificiality, and pretense practiced by some fraternal societies.

Character is the foundation stone on which TKE stands. Character that combines and interweaves the three elements of true brotherhood -- love, charity, and esteem. Character that will stand the test of trying conditions. Character that stands for men -- tall men that have the courage to stand up for their convictions and are humble enough to respect the viewpoint of others.

Our Declaration of Principles aptly state that "sterling character and staunch uprightness" are necessary qualifications for membership in Tau Kappa Epsilon. All other characteristics, though desirable, are secondary to these. We also believe that man is a social being. The social experiences provided by Tau Kappa Epsilon during your collegiate years provides abundant opportunities for responsible social interaction. Through our regular social functions, formal events, and traditional annual events, there are ample opportunities for fun.

Our powerful fraternal ideals have served us well, helping to guide the development of nearly a quarter of a million men who have joined our ranks. Not every Teke lives up to these ideals, and all of us probably fall short in some area. But the striving toward these goals has made, and will continue to make, Tau Kappa Epsilon the most dynamic and progressive social fraternity in existence.
